The Top 12 Best Ethereum Wallets (2021 Edition)

Ethereum currently has the second-largest market cap after Bitcoin. Because of this, many investors are now flocking to Ethereum. Naturally, this has surged demand for secured Ethereum wallets.

In my opinion, all secure wallets must meet these basic criterion:

  • Private keys – Wallets where you control your private keys
  • Ease of use – Elegant UI for ease of use
  • Development community – Active development community
  • Backup & security – Backup and restore features
  • Compatibility – Compatible with different operating systems

I believe if a wallet does not have any one of these things, your coins could be at risk. When looking for wallets, make sure it meets the above criteria before using it to store your coins.

12 Best Ethereum Wallets for All Users

1. Ledger Nano X

Ledger Nano X is an advanced ethereum (ETH) hardware wallet that anyone can use. Ledger has been a pioneer in the industry of hardware wallets. It supports Ethereum and all tokens of the Ethereum blockchain. Ledger-Ethereum integration is currently available via MyEtherwallet, making it easier for you to manage coins.

This is the successor of the popular Ledger Nano S. The features of Ledger Nano X include a battery and Bluetooth, which are also responsible for increasing mobility. Moreover, you can manage more coins at the same time.

The functioning of Ledger Nano X is similar to the Ledger Nano S. You can get it for as low as $119 with free-of-cost future firmware updates. The price also includes free shipping.

2. Ledger Nano S (Hardware Wallet)

The Ledger Nano S is one of the most inexpensive Ethereum hardware wallets available ($59). Here, Ether is stored offline on the device. Whenever you want to spend Ether, Ledger signs in using the private key stored on the device.

You can store both ETH & ETC. I have published a few video guides on using Ledger Nano S that you must check out. This will help you learn everything about Ledger Nano S.

The best thing about the Ledger Nano S is that it comes with a small OLED screen allowing you to control your transactions. Although not advisable, its robust security makes it usable for even a hacked system.

3. Trezor (Hardware Wallet)

Trezor

Trezor was the first hardware wallet developed for Bitcoin. However, now Trezor can be used for Ethereum as well through the MyEtherWallet web interface. It also stores Ether offline on a secure electronic chip that is activated only when you log in with your password.

It is a light and portable device and comes in 3 colors – white, gray, and black – costing $99.

Atomic Wallet is an ultimate solution for Ethereum and ERC20 tokens. The wallet enables you to store, exchange, and buy ETH with a bank card. In the future, Ethereum will be available for swapping with Atomic Swaps – a fully decentralized way for exchanging cryptos without involving intermediaries.

Atomic Wallet supports over 300 cryptocurrencies and offers an interface for all ERC20 tokens. You can typically input a contact address and have the custom coin in your Atomic Wallet. The wallet encrypts your private keys on your device, giving you full access and control over your funds.

Atomic Wallet is available almost for any desktop operating system and all Android and iOS devices.

Argent is an advanced non-custodial ETH wallet that does not let you store the private key. The wallet is configured using your Email address and mobile number and can be recovered using the same.

The unique feature about this wallet is integration with compound.finance, which lets you lend Ethereum and accumulate interest. The wallet also has a dAPP browser. If you want your non-techie family or friend to use an Ethereum wallet, Argent is the easiest one of all.

7. Exodus (Desktop Wallet + mobile)

Exodus is the world’s first multi-cryptocurrency desktop wallet, which is free to use and has an attractive UI. As you open the Exodus wallet, a pie chart will show your entire portfolio of coins.

It supports seven cryptocurrencies (including Ethereum) and is the first desktop wallet to have ShapeShift built in for exchanging cryptocurrencies. You must always be connected to the internet to use Exodus but need not worry as your private keys never leave your machine.

Features like one-click email recovery and backup seed keys for restoring your wallet ensures the security of your funds.

Update: Exodus now supports close to 100 cryptocurrencies! They also have multiple exchange partners (including ShapeShift), which means they can offer more exchangeable assets. Sourcing liquidity from various partners has made exchanging in Exodus faster and more reliable.

They also do not require a personal email – this is an option for those who wish to receive the email backup link. Any email address can be used – or none at all! The email is only used once to send the backup link. Privacy is crucial to Exodus, leading them to not storing any personal data of their customers.

Exodus users can also send funds to and receive funds from smart contracts.

On Jaxx, private keys never leave the device. Its features like seed keys enable you to restore your funds when necessary.

Jaxx wallet is available for Android, iOS, Mac OS, Windows, and Linux. They are also launching a hardware wallet in the coming months.

9. MetaMask (Desktop Wallet + mobile wallet)

MetaMask

MestaMask is one of my favorite Ethereum wallets.

It is like a browser to access the Ethereum network. It not only enables you to store and send Ethereum but also allows you to access decentralized Ethereum apps. It has an intuitive design where you can switch quickly between a test network and the main Ethereum network.

You can watch the following video to learn how MetaMask works.

The private keys are password encrypted and are stored on your machine, which you can export any time.

Supported PlatformsFirefox, Brave, and Chrome extensions
PrivacyNo registration or personal information needed
Smart Contracts SupportYes

10. MyEtherWallet  (Web Wallet)

MyEtherWallet

MyEtherWallet is different from other traditional web wallets.

Why? Unlike other web wallets, here you control Ethereum’s private key on your machine.

It is an open-source wallet with no third-party servers wherein you can also write and access smart contracts. I have written an article about this here. It has an inbuilt BTC to ETH (and vice-versa) swap facility. You can also connect your Trezor or Ledger Nano S to access your funds in MyEther’s browser environment.

Supported PlatformsWeb Wallet, Chrome Extension
PrivacyNo registration or personal information needed
Smart Contracts SupportYes

11. Coinbase (Web Wallet)

Coinbase

Coinbase is one of the most popular Bitcoin web wallets. This year, they have also included Ethereum support. It is a cheap and fast way of storing Ethereum, provided that they serve in your country. You can check here if their services are available in your region.

If it is, follow these steps to use Coinbase:

  • Register at Coinbase
  • Get your public address
  • Transfer your ETH to Coinbase’s public address
  • Store ETH on Coinbase

However, the drawback of Coinbase is that the private keys are not in your control because they are stored on their hosted servers.

It is a decent way to store ETH for a short term. If you planning to hold Ethereum for long, you should use the Paper wallet method or use a hardware wallet like Ledger Nano X.

Supported PlatformsWeb Wallet, Android, and iOS Apps
PrivacyEmail registration and personal information needed
Smart Contracts SupportNo

12. KeepKey (Hardware wallet)

KeepKey is the costliest Ethereum hardware wallet available for $120. It keeps your ETH in a secure offline environment and offers the same features as the Ledger Nano S or Trezor. KeepKey has a bigger screen and is bulky (i.e. not easy to carry around).

KeepKey’s plastic body makes it vulnerable to damage if it is accidentally dropped. If you like its interface, it may be the right wallet for you.

Ethereum is only 5 years old and it is a major reason that the wallet ecosystem has limited options right now. But I am sure as the technology matures, new Ethereum wallets will be available for each type of user.
